Each Monday, we’ll post several candidates from the previous week’s games and ask you — our readers — to vote on whom you think is the most deserving. Voting ends at 5 p.m. each Thursday.
Here are the candidates for Week 1.
Keron Jackson, Houston: The Mustangs traveled to Indiana on Dec. 6 to take part in the Hendricks County Hoopfest and Jackson put on a show. The 6-7 senior poured in a season-high 38 points to power Houston to a 93-77 victory over Don Bosco (Ind.) that improved their record to 6-0.
Fred Martin, Harding: Martin had a fine all-around game as the Lions downed Millington on Dec. 6. The sophomore scored 19 points, pulled down six rebounds and handed out six assists as Harding won, 58-55. A day earlier, he went 6 of 6 from the floor to score 15 in a 70-22 win over Pleasant View.
Fred Smith, Jr., Briarcrest: As the only returning starter from last season’s state championship squad, Smith is handling his larger role with seeming ease. The 6-7 junior scored 22 points in a 69-34 victory over Collierville on Dec. 6 and tallied 27 the following day as the Saints (6-1) suffered their first defeat, 70-52, to Springdale (Ark.).
R.J. Tate, Arlington: Arlington is one of the better stories in the early going, with six wins out of six games. Tate played a huge role in the latest one, scoring 34 points on Dec. 6 as the Tigers downed a good Central team... Click here to read full article
