Once again this season, The Daily Memphian is honoring a high school girls basketball player of the week. But we need your help.
Each Monday, we’ll post several candidates from the previous week’s games and ask you — our readers — to vote on whom you think is the most deserving. Voting ends at 5 p.m. each Thursday.
Here are the candidates for Week 2.
McKenzie Percoski, Houston: You won’t find Percoski’s name on many lists of the state’s top seniors. But you certainly should; she’s been a double-double machine in the early going. Against Briarcrest on Dec. 13, Percoski scored 25 points, grabbed 14 boards, handed out four assists and was a plus-21 during her time on the floor as the Mustangs won, 75-65.
Hilary Shikuku, Collierville: First-year coach Kendrick Watkins has the Dragons off to a strong start, thanks in large part to his senior guard. Shikuku poured in 30 points on Dec. 13 to lead the Dragons to a 50-26 victory over Cabot (Ark.).
Analeticia Velazquez, Bolton: You won’t find many better games than the one Velazquez had against Brighton on Dec. 10. The junior scored 40 points — the most by a local girl so far this season — while adding six rebounds, four assists and 10 steals in a 60-22 victory.
Paige Whitted, Briarcrest: Whitted — who is signed with Cincinnati — had two strong games for the Saints. She had 21 points, two rebounds and two assists in a 43-33 victory over Covington on Dec. 10 then went for a season-high 32 points in a 75-65 loss to Houston three days later.
Tatianna Woods, Memphis School of Excellence-Winchester: One of the city’s best-kept secrets continues to shine. Woods scored 22 points on 9 of 15 shooting from the floor while also racking up six rebounds, seven assists and 10 steals in a 72-41 victory over Power Center Academy on Dec. 13.
