For the first time since 2019, Houston football stands atop Region 8-6A.

The defending state champion Mustangs knocked off previously undefeated Collierville in dramatic fashion, 17-13.

The win came at a cost, though.

All-State quarterback Chandler Day injured his right, non-throwing shoulder on the team's first play from scrimmage with 9:22 remaining in the first quarter. The Tennessee baseball commit fumbled on a carry, afterward landing awkwardly on his right shoulder.

Day never returned to the game and was replaced by younger brother Canon Day, a freshman, who led two scoring drives to secure the victory. Running the ball became the game plan for the Mustangs (8-2, 6-1) as Canon Day attempted just 13 passes, completing four for 26 yards.

Celley Davis and Ladeadrick James took the lion's share of the carries against Collierville (9-1, 6-1) with James scoring the game-winning touchdown — a 43-yarder— with 2:31 left in the game.

Chandler Day's status is up in the air as Houston enters the playoffs as the No. 1 seed. His father, assistant coach Collins Day, told The Commercial Appeal that the severity of his older son's injury is unclear and that he will get X-rays on Monday.
