Once again this season, The Daily Memphian is honoring a high school football player of the week. But we need your help.

Each Monday, we’ll post several candidates from the previous week’s games and ask you — our readers — to vote on whom you think is the most deserving. Voting ends at 5 p.m. each Thursday.

This year’s Player of the Week is sponsored by OrthoSouth.

Here are the candidates for Week 11.

Damontae Dillard, Northpoint: It was another big game for Dillard as the Trojans wrapped up the regular season with a 31-14 victory against ECS. The senior rushed for 183 yards on 27 carries and scored on runs of 2, 43 and 40 yards as the Trojans improved to 6-4.

Gavin Gatere, MUS: The Owls will be the fourth seed in from Division 2-AAA West thanks in large part to the efforts of Gatere. He ran for 105 yards on 15 carries and scored on runs of 13, 12 and 25 yards to lead MUS to a 31-10 victory against Briarcrest.

Ladeadrick James, Houston: James provides the lightning to Celley Davis’ thunder in the Houston backfield. And the senior struck at the most opportune time against Collierville, scoring on a 43-yard with 2:31 left to give the Mustangs a 17-13 win and a top seed for the Class 6A playoffs. James finished with an even 100 yards on just eight carries.

Kelvin Perkins, Southwind: Last year’s Class 5A Mr. Football winner turned in one of the best games of his outstanding career in a victory against Brighton. Perkins completed 14 of 16 passes for 278 and seven touchdowns (39, 26, 37, 11, 6, 36, 13) while running for 35 yards on three carries as the Jaguars rolled, 52-7.

Zyress Short, Fairley: Short took a short pass from Andrew Johnson and turned it into a 72-yard touchdown in the first half then hauled in a 31-yard score over two defenders in the second as Fairley won the Region 8-2A title for the third straight season, 34-0 against Mitchell. Short also forced a fumble as the city’s leading defensive recorded its seventh shutout of the year.

Tay Starks, Munford: It was another productive game for Starks, whose numbers will rival any other freshman in the state. He carried 29 times for 160 yards and scored three touchdowns as the Cougars won Region 8-5A for the fourth time in five seasons, 28-14. Starks has 1,479 yards and... Click here to read full article
