Houston High girls win Frank Horton Classic

For the fourth consecutive year coach Rachel Randall’s Houston High varsity girls cross country team took home the trophy for the top girls team at the Frank Horton Classic cross country race Saturday night at Shelby Farms.

Led by Nora Newhouse’s third-place finish the Mustangs outscored Independence (Tennessee) High by seven points, 80 to 87.

Newhouse, a junior at Houston, ran the 5K course in 18:52. Other Mustang runners in the top 25 were: Martha Kate Jessop (9th place), Lindsey Barnes (11th) and Samantha Hardison (25th).

Jonesboro’s Lauren Thompson won the girls race in 18:39.

West Plains (Missouri) High won the boys race, with CBHS the top team from Memphis, placing third.

Asher Oats of Independence won the individual title and set a new meet record of 14:50.

CBHS sophomore Noah Mullenix was the top finisher from Memphis, placing fifth at 15:43. Other CBHS runners scoring in the top 25 were Joe Edwards (8th) and Daniel Hudnall (24th).

The Horton was started in 1989 in honor of the late CBHS cross country and distance coach Frank Horton.
