The showdown lived up to its billing as Houston escaped with a 36-30 win at Germantown Friday in Week 3 of the TSSAA football season.

Tennessee baseball commit Chandler Day scored the winning touchdown for Houston on a 32-yard keeper on fourth-and-1 with 32 seconds left.

Then, Ladeadrick James' interception at the Houston 15 ended Germantown's final threat as time expired.

Day's touchdown followed a 12-yard touchdown run by Germantown's Kavious Record with four minutes left that tied it 30-30.

"I was really just trying to get 1 yard but that hole opened up like a semi-truck," Day said of his winning score. "Anyone could've run through that hole and scored."

The senior two-sport star completed 12 of 21 passes for 271 yards and three touchdowns. He added 80 yards rushing on eight attempts.

"I missed two (interceptions) earlier but it came back to me to put the game away," James said. "We showed them who runs Germantown."

Defending 6A champion Houston (3-0, 1-0 in Region 8-6A) extended its win streak to 15 games. The last loss? — a 14-13 defeat to Germantown in Week 3 that set up the Red Devils' region title. But Houston won 30-10 in the state quarterfinals.

"We never forgot the feeling of that last loss," Day said. "I knew they were focused on (this game) considering we ended their season here last year. I'm really happy for us."

Before Day took things into his own hands late, it was Miller who paced Houston on offense.

A week after running back Celley Davis rushed for 142 yards, DJ Miller's 221-yard, receiving game shows the depth of the Mustangs' offense.

"Coming out of halftime, I told myself that I gotta make big plays, and I did," said Miller, who had a 50-yard TD catch earlier in the fourth quarter.

"He's ridiculous," Day said of Miller. "I've never played with a receiver that can do the things he does. He just understands the game."

Over the last two seasons, the regular season result between the two Germantown schools was reversed in the playoffs. Germantown (2-1, 0-1), led by first-year quarterback Mekhi Robins, who was 9-of-17 passing for 192 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, will aim to continue the trend come playoff time.

"We knew coming into this year that when we played Germantown, we were gonna get the dub," James said. " We're gonna take the next one too if we see them in the playoffs."
