Here’s a look at what to expect from the top girls soccer teams in the Daily Memphian coverage area this season.
Houston

Outlook: On the other end of the state, Bearden remains the 500-pound gorilla of Tennessee girls soccer; the Bulldogs have won the last three state championships — defeating Houston twice in the final and last year in the quarterfinals — and have zero losses and just two draws in their last 70 games.
It’s a challenge Houston is happy to accept and it will get its chance Saturday when it plays Bearden at the Tri-Star Classic in Murfreesboro. But the postseason is when results matter most and the Mustangs will be in that conversation as well.
Leading the returnees is senior Ellett Smith, who was named Daily Memphian player of the year in 2023 after scoring 13 goals and assisting on 17 more as the Mustangs finished 16-1-2. She bagged a pair in this week’s 8-1 victory over University School of Jackson and so did Zerina Markovic, an emerging attacking talent.
Sophomore Scarlett Cowles is coming off a strong season in midfield and the defense should be excellent as well.
