Running in familiar surroundings at the Houston Track Classic, the Houston High senior set a pair of individual meet records in one of the many highlight performances of Tennessee’s largest regular-season competition. Marsh won the 1,600 in a time of 4 minutes, 56.51 seconds then came back to capture the 800 in a personal-best time of 2:12.94.
Those stellar numbers came after she helped Houston win the 4x800 relay Friday in a record-setting time of 9:42.68.
“I’m just way more confident in my abilities,” she said. “A lot more cross-training and working on my sleep ... trying to get eight or nine hours a night. I just want to get myself in the best position possible.”
Her early position in the 800 was in second place behind Collierville’s terrific junior Ava Lang. But Marsh surged past her competitor over the final 200 meters or so in the best race of the day before surging to the finish for what she called a very satisfying victory.
“That’s the end of the triple,” she said. “We’re pretty dead after running the 4x8 and the mile. I’m really happy to pull it out. We’ve run the 800 a long time with each other. She’s a great racer, but I just gave it all I had at the end.”
Marsh was indeed giving it her all, but she made it look easy. The same could be said for another senior, Crosstown’s Austin McCall, who out-dueled Collierville’s David DeBerry to capture the 200 in a time of 21.39 and also took the 400 in 47.34.
