Once again this season, The Daily Memphian is recognizing a high school girls basketball player of the week. But we need your help.

Each Monday, we’ll post several candidates from the previous week’s games, and we’d like for you — our readers — to select the winner. Voting ends at 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4 and this week’s vote will encompass games played over the two-week Christmas break.

Here are the candidates from Week 5:

Anna Lee Avery, Houston: One of the city’s top seniors, Avery led the Mustangs to a third-place finish at the Milan Classic. In the third-place game, she scored 29 points as Houston held off an improved St. Agnes squad, 56-45.

Amare’ Boothe, Hamilton: Boothe is the city’s leading scorer and she turned in the highest-scoring girls game so far this year against MLK Prep on Dec. 19. The 5-7 sophomore scored 30 points in the first half and finished with 45 as the Wildcats rolled, 75-56.

Tierney Kelsey, Whitehaven: Kelsey’s transfer from Arlington has been a boon for the Tigers, who won the Neosho (Mo.) Holiday Classic with an 82-22 victory over Crooked Oak (Okla.) last week. Kelsey scored 35 in that one and averaged 26.7 points in three tournament games.

Zaria Moss, Arlington: Coach Sherri Smith’s Tigers are in rebuilding mode this year but they have a good one in Moss. The freshman scored 30 points to lead her team to a 62-38 victory over Hamilton at Southwind’s Clorine Edwards Classic on Dec. 28.

Tristan Spearman, East: Many in the know will tell you that Spearman is the best point guard in the city and her performance at the Collierville Dragon Fire tournament last week backs that up. She scored 26 points in a victory over Center Hill in the semifinals then went off for 42 as the Mustangs won the title with a 68-61 victory over the host team in the final. In that one, the senior made all four 3-point attempts and finished 16 of 22 from the floor.... Click here to read full article
