After Houston High School’s historic football state championship win, some began considering an appropriate way to honor the team.

Parades are one way to celebrate a monumental sports victory. At least, that’s what professional teams do. So with the Germantown holiday parade coming up, it seemed only natural to include the winners.

The city made the decision earlier this week to add the football team to the parade lineup. The Mustangs will be in a prime position, along with city dignitaries, neighborhood groups and Santa Claus, marching along Farmington Boulevard.

Houston High principal Hallie Ross was with the Mustangs for their whirlwind weekend in Chattanooga.

“I think it’s so representative of what this whole state-championship run has been for this school,” she said. “To see the support all throughout the community, that has meant a lot for them to back this team and back our school.”

Ross is in her first year as principal, and the district also hired Marvis Davis as its athletic director this year.

“I keep telling people I’m afraid I may have peaked too soon,” Ross said, laughing. “I don’t know how it gets much better.”

Annually, Leadership Germantown Alumni Association presents the Joe Reed Award to a graduate of its leadership class for their contributions and volunteer work in the community. That person also leads the parade. This year, that is Mindy Fischer. She will be riding in a Mustang convertible, followed by the other Mustangs.

“I’m just so excited about this,” Fischer said. “When do you get the chance to be a grand marshal for a Christmas parade? The icing and cherry on top is getting the state champs.”

“They deserve to be honored as the first HHS football team to win a state title,” Stacey Crockett, the suburb’s chief communications officer, said by email. “It’s something the whole community can celebrate and take pride in.”
