Houston accomplished what not many thought it would: winning the school's first football state championship with a 24-9 win over Oakland on Saturday night.

Rightfully, the Mustangs are the No. 1 team in the final Memphis area rankings of the 2023 football season. Here's where the other teams finished the season.

1. Houston (13-2): The Mustangs ended the season with a 12-game winning streak and a TSSAA 6A state championship, defeating Oakland 24-9 in Chattanooga.

2. Southwind (13-1): Southwind had a historic 2023 season. After losing in the first round of the playoffs in the 2022 season, the Jaguars reached the TSSAA Class 5A semifinals, losing to Page, 10-7. 

3. Germantown (12-1): Germantown finishes the football season as the No. 3 team in the area after its season ended in the TSSAA Class 6A quarterfinals. The Red Devils had an undefeated regular season and won the Region 8-6A title. 

4. Memphis University School (9-2): Despite winning the Division II-AAA West region title, the Owls' season was cut short in the playoffs. MUS had a first-round bye in the Division II-AAA playoffs, but lost in the quarterfinals to Knoxville Catholic. 

5. Covington (10-3): Skylan Smith dominated for Covington this season, leading them to the TSSAA 3A quarterfinals. The Chargers' season ended with a 25-24 loss to Dyersburg.

6. Lausanne (9-2): The Lynx won the Division II-AA West region title. Their season ended in the Division II-AA quarterfinals with a one-point loss to Davidson Academy. 

7. Bartlett (8-4): In Chris Smith's first season with the Panthers, he helped them reach the second round of the TSSAA 6A playoffs, losing to Germantown, 38-16. 

8. Collierville (8-4): Collierville stunned undefeated Clarksville in the first round of the TSSAA Class 6A playoffs, but their playoff run came up short with a loss to eventual state champion, Houston, 40-7. 

9. FACS (9-3): FACS hosted its first playoff game for the first time in 10 years and won a home playoff game for the first time in 15 years. The program's playoff run was ended by eventual state champion Middle Tennessee Christian in the Division II-A quarterfinals.

10. Fairley (10-3): Fairley's dream season ended one game shy of a state championship appearance. The Bulldogs stormed through the TSSAA football playoffs, but lost to Riverside 32-14 in the 2A semifinals.
