Houston, meanwhile, has never won a title despite being a perennial Class AAA tournament team under Becky Pendleton. This year’s group is young and not lacking in talent, only occasionally in confidence.

They played with plenty of poise against Maryville, though, winning 25-19, 25-18, 25-17. Houston (30-8) will face defending state champion Cleveland in a noon match Wednesday at Siegel High.

“As the year has progressed, we’ve just gotten more and more confident in our skill,” said junior setter Sydnee Carter. “In the beginning it was like, ‘can I do this?’ But now we know we can. No nerves (Tuesday). We were just ready to win.”

That’s what Pendleton — who has her team in the final eight for the 13th straight year — likes to hear.

“We’re a young team and a really fun team,” she said. “The only thing we lack is confidence. If we can just keep our confidence going through, I think we’re going to be a contender that a lot of people ... they have nothing to lose and that’s what’s great about it. When we pass the ball (well), we’re going to be hard to beat.”

Elsewhere in Class AAA, it was a frustrating morning for Collierville, the 2022 runner-up and one of the favorites this year. The Dragons never really got into their game against East Hamilton and fell in five, dropping the deciding set, 15-12.

“Our skill level just dropped,” said coach Lindsey Vicknair. “We did not come ready to play. The amount of errors we made. ... It is uncharacteristic and this is not the time to do that. They’re a good team but I believe we’re the better team.”
