State volleyball preview: Six local teams vying for titles this week

The TSSAA state volleyball championships get underway Tuesday at various venues in Murfreesboro with six teams from the Shelby-Metro area in contention for titles.

Here’s a look at what to expect from the local contingent.

Houston
Coach: Becky Pendleton.

Tournament history: 17th appearance (last in 2022).

Best finish: Houston finished as runner-up in 2019.

Record: 29-8.

First match: Tuesday vs. Maryville (38-11), 2:30 p.m. at Siegel High.

The rundown: A model of consistency under coach Pendleton, Houston is making its 13th consecutive appearance in the state tournament. And, and always, the Mustangs will be a very tough out.

Junior setter Sydnee Carter is the on-court leader and Houston has some good size and athleticism across the front with Teri Brooks (junior middle hitter), Ella Seeger (junior outside hitter) and especially outside hitter Sydni Vice, the sophomore sister of former Houston basketball standout Brock Vice and one of the nation’s top prospects in the class of 2026.

The Mustangs pushed Collierville to the limit in the final of the region tournament then went on the road to Clarksville and defeated the Wildcats for the sixth year in a row in the sectional round.
