Sophie Christopher's State Standing ahead of Final Rounds

Sophie Christopher would undoubtedly agree. After getting stung by the early chill in the air, the Houston senior — and defending state champion — put herself in a strong position with a 1-over 71 on the Highlands Course. She trails Warren County’s Lauren Slatton by three.

“I got out of the condo we were staying this morning and I was like ‘oh my gosh. It’s 30-something degrees,” she laughed. “I swear last week it was 90. The wind picked up towards the end of the round but other than that, the course was pretty nice. The greens were OK.”

A victory Tuesday would make Christopher the first public school girl from Shelby County to repeat as state champion since Brighton’s Aubree Jones did it a decade ago. And regardless of the result, it will be the final high school round for Christopher.

Not that it’s on her mind or anything.

“A hundred percent,” she said. “It’s sad. There’s some pressure in there, I guess. I am sad about it but it’s just more motivation to go out and do good ... nothing too drastic. Just get a good sleep and go in there with the same mindset I (have) in every tournament.

“Nothing changes based on the day or the tournament. Just go out there and go as low as I can.”

While Christopher’s high school career is winding down, Catherine Bowie’s is only beginning. And she’s marked herself as a player to keep an eye on going forward.

Bowie, an eighth-grader at Hutchison and the youngest competitor in the field, shot 3-over to stand alone in fourth place in D2-AA, three strokes off the lead. Savannah Cherry of Nashville Ensworth leads.

Bowie’s teammate, Audrey Simmons, carded a 78 to put the Sting at 11-over in the team standings. They trail Ensworth by six strokes and ... Click here to read full article
