Nevertheless, Houston would have made getting into the playoffs tougher had it lost to Whitehaven on Friday; a defeat would have been it second in the brutal Region 8-6A. Instead, the Mustangs came up with their best performance of the season and left Whitehaven with a 48-14 win.
Shawne Jones was the star, catching two touchdown passes from Chandler Day, while also running one in. Day, who finished 11 of 19 for 150 yards, also threw scoring passes to D.J. Miller and Andre Allen.
Day ran for 73 yards while Damon Sisa picked up 64 and scored twice. Houston’s other touchdown came on Jose Joiner’s pick-six.
The Mustangs, ranked sixth in The Daily Memphian Dandy Dozen, improve to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in region play. Those two losses are by a combined three points; Houston fell to South Panola, 28-26, in Week 2 and to Germantown, 14-13, in Week 3.
