Germantown (2-0) at Houston (1-1)
What to expect: Plenty of pride — along with a leg up in ultra-competitive Region 8-6A — will be on the line when the city of Germantown’s two high schools meet in the league opener.
Germantown moved up to fourth in this week’s state rankings, and picked up a pair of first-place votes after last week’s 24-12 victory over DeSoto Central. For the second straight game, the Red Devils were strong defensively, not allowing a point until midway through the fourth quarter. And on offense, transfer quarterback Cordero Walker continues to shine in an offense that has plenty of other weapons as well. Larry Johnson, for example, had a 61-yard touchdown run against DeSoto Central while Tre’Von McGory had a terrific catch to open the scoring.
Houston might feel like it let one get away last week as it fell to traditional Mississippi powerhouse South Panola, 28-26. D.J. Miller had seven catches for 116 yards and three touchdowns — including one with under five minutes to go to pull Houston to within two. Running the ball was an issue, however, and the Mustangs will need to put some drives together against a Germantown defense anchored by two Division 1 linemen, Daniel Anderson (North Carolina) and D.J. Allen (Central Florida).
