It’s back!

After a long, cold winter and a grueling summer of getting ready, high school football is back for the 2023 season. And — shades of the late, great Bridges Classic — there are some good public vs. private match-ups to spice up the Week 1 slate.

Here are some of the week’s games were most excited about, along with the complete schedule for Week 1.

Houston (9-3) at Briarcrest (5-6)

Storylines: These two met in one of the best games of the year last year; Houston built a big lead early before the Saints roared back late to take a 29-28 victory.

That gave the Saints a 2-0 start but unfortunately, it was downhill the rest of the way as they lost six of nine to close. Renowned Chattanooga Baylor coach Phil Massey takes over this year and he’ll have some good players to work with, including quarterback Cade Carlson, receiver Caleb Donaldson, defensive linemen Brandon Myers and Aidan Hydrick and two-way standout Wes Dabbs.

Houston has high hopes once again and its hopes were bolstered about three weeks ago when Celley Davis — a highly-regarded running back in the Class of 2026 — transferred in from Lausanne. He’ll team with senior Damon Sisa to form a tremendous 1-2 punch in the ... Click here to read full article
