The lowdown: Few programs can match the sustained success of Houston under Pendleton; last season was the Mustangs’ 16th trip to the Class AAA state tournament and 12th in a row. Seventeen and 13 are definitely on the table.
Junior Sydnee Carter, a setter, is heading into her third year as a start while already attracting some Division 1 attention. Junior middle blocker Teri Brooks is explosive and quick and Pendleton is expecting big things from another junior, outside hitter Ella Seeger, who battled a shoulder injury in 2022. And make it a point to watch Sydni Vice at least once this year; the sophomore — the sister of Creighton basketball freshman Brock Vice — is tall and skilled like big brother and enters 2023 as one of the nation’s top underclass prospects.
