Each Monday, we’ll post several candidates from the previous week’s games and we’re asking our readers to vote for the winner. Voting will end at 5 p.m. Thursday.
Here are the candidates for Week 2.
Hudson Brown, Northpoint baseball: Led by Brown, the Trojans claimed some impressive victories last week. On March 24, the senior homered and drove in two runs and also pitched five innings of four-hit ball to get the win in a 4-3 victory over DeSoto Central. The next night, Brown homered twice and drove in five runs to send the Trojans past CBHS, 11-6.
Kaue Costa, Lausanne soccer: The senior played a key role in his team’s victory over MUS on March 24, scoring twice as the Lynx won, 3-0.
Eva Gautreaux, Houston track and field: Gautreaux, a senior, turned in a stellar performance in winning the 400 at the Jack Moran Relays, finishing in a time of 56.77. It was a full two seconds ahead of the second-place finisher and gives Gautreaux the state’s top time in the event so far this season.
Miles Harper, Bartlett baseball: The Panthers and Independence played a true rarity at the Jim Painter Classic in Columbia, Tenn. on March 24. Harper pitched a six-inning no-hitter with eight strikeouts for the Panthers but lost, 1-0, because Indy’s starter also pitched a no-no.
Kate Hogan, Collierville softball: Northpoint rallied to make things interesting against the Dragons on March 24, scoring six times in the top of the seventh to take a 10-9 lead. In the bottom of the frame, Hogan singled in the tying run to cap a 3 for 5, three-RBI afternoon in a game Collierville won, 11-10.
Alexis Parent, Hutchison lacrosse: A talented junior attacking player for the perennially-strong Sting, Parent netted six goals against St. Louis John Burroughs on March 25 to lead her team to a 15-7 victory.
Charlee Smith, St. Benedict softball: The Eagles broke out the big bats against Grenada (Miss.) at the South Panola tournament on March 24, winning 17-3. Smith led the way, going with 3 for 4 and accounting for all four of her RBI with a grand slam.
Zavien Wolfe, Central track and field: It would be hard to imagine a better 48-hour stretch than the one Wolfe had at the Jack Moran Relays at CBHS. On March 23, the Georgia signee won the long jump with a leap of 24-8.25, the best distance so far this season among U.S. high schoolers. Then on March 25, he ran the lead leg on the Warriors’ 400-meter relay team that finished in 41.04 to break a 40-year-old state record. Wolfe also won the triple jump — the event in which he won a state title last year — in 48-1.25. <... Click here to read full article
