Each Monday, we’ll post several candidates from the previous week’s games and we’re asking our readers to vote for the winner. Voting will end at 5 p.m. Thursday.
Here are the candidates for Week 1.
Evan Bloomer, FACS: One of several local baseball standouts in the class of 2024, Bloomer batted .556 with 12 RBI as the Crusaders went 2-1-1 at the Battle of the Beach tournament in Biloxi, Miss. His best game came in a 9-9 time-limit tie with Woodlands Christian Academy out of Texas, hitting a grand slam and driving in six.
Chandler Day, Houston: The son of Houston associate head baseball coach and former Germantown standout Collins Day is following in his old man’s footsteps. Chandler got his sophomore season off to a rousing start against DeSoto Central on March 14, striking out eight and allowing two runs over four innings and hitting a first-inning grand slam as the Mustangs won, 13-11.
Jack Gleason, Briarcrest: Gleason was lights-out for the Saints against Tupelo (Miss.) on March 15. He pitched a complete-game three-hitter with only one walk and nine strikeouts as Briarcrest won, 8-0, in the Battle of the Beach tournament in Biloxi. The junior right-hander pounded the zone all game, throwing 67 of his 92 pitches for strikes.
Riley Goodman, CBHS: One of the area’s top returning pitchers, Goodman got his junior campaign off to a stellar start on March 14. The right-hander pitched a complete-game, five-inning no-hitter against North Pontotoc (Miss.), walking just one and striking out eight while throwing 44 of his 69 pitches for strikes as the Brothers won, 16-0.
Kyle Mabie, ECS: Mabie established himself as one of the area’s top baseball sluggers as a freshman in 2022 and he appears to be picking right up where he left off. He went 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBI as the Eagles downed Fayette Academy, 12-2, on March 14 and then doubled twice and drove in five more runs the following day as ECS blanked St. Benedict, 10-0.
Tanner Wages, Collierville: The junior was the hero for Collierville in an opening-day baseball victory over Briarcrest on March 13. Wages singled in two runs with two out in the bottom of the seventh, capping a five-run rally that enabled the Dragons to edge the Saints, 6-5.
Eli West, Tipton-Rosemark: West did a little bit of everything for the Rebels as they opened the baseball season with an 11-1 victory over Knights Baseball Academy on March 13.
