Led by Gracey Owens’ eighth-place finish the Houston High School cross country team won the girls division at Saturday’s City Auto Memphis Twilight XC Classic at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. Coach Rachel Randall’s squad scored 91 points to win the meet hosted by Christian Brothers University and featured 39 high school girls teams and 55 boys teams.

The weather was a factor as runners had to incur rain, lightning delays and muggy running conditions.

“I’m extremely proud of how the girls handled the uncertainty with delays and the storms and were able to show how hard they’ve been working this summer and stepped up when it counted,” said Randall. “They’re a very young team, so I’m excited to see where we can go from here.”

Zoe Marsh (16th place), Lindsey Barnes (23), Ava Stockdale (33) and Nora Newhouse (35) contributed to the Mustangs’ title-winning run.

In the boys race Rogers (Ark.) Heritage High School took the boys title and Memphis CBHS was runner-up. Brett Barron and Kaleb Smith were the top two runners for coach Nick Dwyer’s team as both ran the 5K course in 16:48.

Chaz Jones, William Boutwell and Joe Edwards rounded out the top five for the Brothers.

“We felt like we performed like we figured we would for this time of the year,” said Dwyer. “I think others were more surprised at our finish than us.

“Dylan Hunter ran under 17 (minutes) in the JV race. That shows our depth ... our depth is where we are strong.”

The top four CBHS runners ran within 12 seconds of one another.

The Bartlett boys finished 7th, Houston 8th, Collierville 9th and Arlington 10th.
