Saturday evening’s high school cross-country races capped off a series of elementary, middle and high school races at the event created in 1989 to honor Coach Frank Horton, the former CBHS cross country and track distance coach.
The Classic is hosted by Christian Brothers High School and Memphis Youth Athletics.
CBHS, coached by Nick Dwyer, won the varsity boys title edging Spain Park High School from Hoover, Ala. by 4 points (83-87). West Plains (Mo.) High placed third with Houston High and Arlington High rounding out the top 5.
Coach Rachel Randall’s Houston High team captured the girls title with 41 points. Hernando High was second and Spain Park took third.
Individually, Jackson Martin of Creek Wood High School won the boys title covering the 5K course in 15:49. Kaleb Smith of CBHS was second, followed closely by Houston’s Hays Adams and Arlington’s Brent Lyons.
In the girls race, Abby Faith Cheeseman of The Webb School won the title in 17:04. Lauren Rutlin of St. George’s placed second (18:07). The rest of the top five were Savannah Rivera of Knoxville Ambassadors High School, Meriel Rowland of Hutchison and Zoe Marsh of Houston.
