MORE THAN $1 MILLION ALREADY RAISED

More than $1 million already raised

Houston High School is getting a new $3.5 million field house, and more than $1 million has already been raised in a month.

The money is coming from private donations, with Germantown fathers and Houston alumni planning the new building.

One of the field house committee chairs is former NFL New England Patriots Lineman David Nugent. He said the facilities have not changed since they were built in 1989.

“It's the same. It's the same locker room. It's the same weight room,” he said. “If we had what a lot of these schools have these days, back then, I can't imagine how much better we could've been.”

FOX13 reached out to the City of Germantown, who says the 2018 budget does not have any money set aside for this project.

However, the committee said they think both Germantown and GMSD will give around 15% of what they raise. This is not a set number.

The committee members told us they want to build this in order to keep up with other municipalities across the area.

Collierville is building a brand new Sportsplex with its new school, and Bartlett is planning an extensive renovation. Both of the city’s taxes went up because of these changes.

Football coach Will Hudgens said they will have up to date technology in the field house, with projectors and computers.

“A bigger weight room, the bigger locker room, something that all of our athletes are going to be able to use and take advantage of.”

They want to also put the school’s band room in the building.
