This year’s “Classy vs. Trashy” basketball game against Our neighbors at Collierville High School had a little bit of everything for those in attendance on Friday.

A referee almost passing out, a clock malfunction mid-game, a fan ejection, curious fashion statements by a coaching staff, and one of the most electrifying performances in recent memory by a Mustang were just a few of the items of note.

What it did not have is much drama about the outcome of either game.

Both Girls and Boys Basketball teams held double digits lead most of the second halves of each game with the Girls topping out at 18 before finishing with a 59-45 victory and the Boys reaching over 25 before finishing with an 88-73 win over Collierville.

The Girls were led by AAA Miss Basketball candidate, Jayla Hemingway, who fought through some bogged down and physical play to score 17 points. Fellow sophomore Melisa Carter added 12 points with Freshmen Destinee Wells chipping in 10 points while handling most of the ball handling for the evening.

After a sluggish offensive performance and some adjustments made by Head Girls Coach, Ben Moore, the Lady Mustangs opened the 2nd half on an 8-0 run and never looked back.

The Boys had a dominating 31 point blitzkrieg put on by Junior Ryan Boyce that was punctuated by a double pumping, Jordan-esque dunk on a Collierville defender that even had Superintendent Jason Manuel on his feet in applause. Sophomore Bruce Guy Jr. scored 17 points and Junior Carlos Sandifer added four 3pters for 12 points to pace the Mustangs.

They raced to a 12 point halftime lead building it to 22 points at the end of the 3rd quarter.

Heading into this week’s District Tournament opener against Germantown, Friday night’s performance have Houston Basketball fans excited and optimistic about the future.
